The set of three tiered stacked wood boxes with cover has a trunk like form. It was specially designed for storing textile. The separate tiers allowed clothing to be better organized. What makes this trunk special is the refined bamboo matting that was used on the sides. This is Chinese basket weaving at its best. The tiny bamboo strips were softened so they could be woven into intricate patterns. The other decorative elements are the tiny metal Buddhist peace symbols at the four corners of the cover, and the rows of tiny bosses that lined each tier, The set of stacked boxes was made for the wealthy merchants of Shanxi Province in North Central China, It has the simplicity of form of Ming Dynasty, and It could be older than the date of 1800's. What attracted me to this interesting piece of Chinese furniture is the intricate bamboo weaving that decorated the sides of the trunk, It appeared to be a lost art form because the young people entering the work force in China today would rather work in factories than learning a craft. There are still places in China that produce woven bamboo objects, but the quality of the workmanship cannot be compared to the delicacy of the work from 200 years ago. 31 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep and 24 inches high.
