A traditional Chinese ink painting is done on paper and a paper weight is a must have object. My grandfather Tse Kapo practised Chinese calligraphy everyday and on warm days he would do his calligraphy outside. A paperweight, or paperweights were crucial on windy days to protect his paper from blowing away. He would love this porcelain paper weight painted with a traditional Chinese Snow Scape. The style is the Southern School of landscape painting, where the mountains in the background are secondary to the great expanse of water and the promontory and snow covered trees. There is a tranquility expressed in the painting that reflects the beauty of the snow scene and the feeling of loneliness that should be felt by the solitary figure on the boat is overwhelmed by the surroundings. The inscription on the top left corner pays reverence to the name Zhusan, a collective group of artists who specialized in painting on porcelain.
