The seated figure in a meditative pose is identified by name in calligraphy as the 261st Patriach of Zen Buddhism. He wore the traditional hooded robe and seated in the lotus position with the garment covering his knees. The carving is well defined. By nature bamboo root has rough surfaces and there are spots that show the flaws. There is also age cracks. The rest of the figure is in good condition. It stands 10 inches tall.
From the style of calligraphy, a possible date could be 1920's to 1950's.
